ON THE CASE

The suitcase is a beautiful thing, that can have other uses besides its original travel purpose, says Jacqueline Wake Young

H ooray! It’s 2021! We might actually be able to go on holiday at some point this year!

The travel industry certainly seems to think so – with confidence slowly returning to the sector and flights being reinstated. We can only hope holidaying will once again become a normal thing.

Even just planning a vacation is fun, with plenty of paraphernalia that goes alongside this, such as guidebooks, phrase books, apps and travel forums.

Packing pouches are getting a lot of attention at the moment, and it’s amazing how much time a person can waste, say, watching a Youtube video of someone packing a suitcase the packing pouch way.

Not that we’d ever waste time in this ridiculous way here on The Courier features desk, but we can report that packing pouches do take up more room than the more preferred rolling method – although the benefits are that all your things are neatly segregated and easy to find.

As for suitcases, trunks and cases, they can be objects of beauty – so much so they are often repurposed as storage or furniture.

Here, we have featured actual luggage alongside home decor items that look like luggage but which wouldn’t actually function as such.

There is a certain romance about a vintage suitcase covered in stickers from far-off places or a battered old travelling trunk.

Such items can be picked up from markets, ebay and charity shops and put to good use around the home.

Consider stacking attractive vintage luggage of various sizes in a hallway as storage – or using one old-fashioned trunk as a coffee table.
