C’MON GET HAPPY
Jacqueline Wake Young finds out why Pantone has chosen grey and yellow as its Colour of the Year 2021
G rey and yellow have been around as a home decor theme since the dawn of interior design TV shows – and presumably before that.
The idea is that grey is cooling and calming – and possibly boring – and yellow adds a bit of zip, a bit of punch, a bit of pizazz, a bit of ener… OK you get the idea.
Curious then, that Pantone should pick these two colours as its Colour of the Year 2021, when there is nothing new about this combination.
Dig a little deeper however, into the reasoning behind this choice, and it’s understandable why the people at Pantone thought we needed these colour choices right now.
And it isn’t just any old grey and yellow they have made the Colour of 2021 (don’t ask why they call two colours “Colour”, singular, just go with it); to be specific it’s PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating.
Pantone calls this: “A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”
Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, explains: “The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
Reassuring words from Pantone – let’s just hope those cushion covers and bedspreads understand what’s expected of them.
