The spoils were shared in an evenly-matched contest at the Reigart Stadium.

A Kieran Inglis penalty nine minutes into the second half after Sean Slaven had been fouled inside the area gave City the lead but Rovers equalised with five minutes remaining when Matthew Aitken converted from the spot after he had been fouled in the box by Luc Bollan.

The home side’s Aaron Lynas was given his marching orders deep into stoppage time by referee Steven Reid for a shocking challenge on Abdul Osman.

The result was academic as far as City were concerned as their fate as the league’s bottom side was confirmed earlier in the week, but manager Michael Paton wants his players to carry forward the fighting spirit they showed against Rovers into the final league match against Stenhousemuir tomorrow night and the pyramid play-off final to follow.

“We have to maintain the commitment and desire we showed today into our final matches,” he said. “We have to try and build up some momentum.

“There were a lot of positives to take. We dealt with crosses into our box really well and picked up a lot of second balls and right up until their penalty, I didn’t think Albion really threatened.

“The players gave their all and it’s been really hard for them recently with games coming thick and fast. However, after Tuesday night, we’ll be able to get a few days’ breathing space which will allow us time and space to properly prepare for the vital play-off matches ahead.”
