Community spirit on show in annual gardening contest
The Dundee community’s commitment to looking after their environment has been recognised in the city’s annual garden and allotment competition, with the winners being unveiled.
The contest is run by Dundee City Council as part of the Take Pride in Your City project, which aims to encourage the public to work alongside each other to improve the environment of the city and image as an attractive place to live, to work and to visit.
The overall winner of the garden competition was Mr John Stoa, who was awarded with the accolade for his work on his front garden, which came first in the residential front garden or entrance category.
Mr Stoa’s allotment was seen to be of an equally high standard and achieved the top place in the allotment competition’s Phin Cup category.
The overall winners of the allotment competition were Wellbeing Works Dundee, who were rewarded for their plot at Kinnaird Allotments, which was placed first in the Corporation Trophy category.
Wellbeing Works is a non-profit organisation aiming to promote better wellbeing for those with mental illness, building their confidence, connecting with others and having a positive impact on their community.
Neighbourhood services convener Heather Anderson, said: “The garden and allotment competition is a great way to celebrate all the hard work that individual residents, community organisations, and businesses across Dundee are putting into their growing spaces.
“These gardens and allotments not only benefit those who use them but also enhance local communities by providing colourful displays for those passing by and in many cases fresh produce for others to enjoy.
“The competition judge was impressed by the high standard of entries across the city.
“I would like to congratulate this year’s category winners and the efforts of everyone who entered this year.
“It’s fantastic to see so many people getting involved and I hope that even more people have been inspired to get gardening.”
