Perth curlers through to last eight in Calgary
Perth curlers Robin Brydone and Duncan Mcfadzean are still on target for a Transatlantic double after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Original 16 Cash Spiel in Calgary yesterday.
Brydone, Mcfadzean and team-mates Euan Kyle and skip Ross Whyte lifted last week’s Swiss Cup – becoming the first Scottish champions since 2014 – and they won all three group games in Canada.
Saturday’s 5-2 defeat to Edmonton’s Ryan Jacques temporarily halted their title charge, but they then beat Ryan Parent’s local rink 5-3 to book their last eight spot.
Elsewhere in Canada, Kinross skip Beth Farmer missed out on the Alberta Open quarter-finals when she let a 4-2 lead slip against local player Atina Johnston, who won 5-4.
Edzell curler James Craik also failed to progress at the Prague Classic after the world junior champion and his team lost their final Pool C match 7-5 to Turkey’s
Ugurcan Karagoz. Craik’s 3-2 winning record was not enough to reach the knockout stages.
Meanwhile Forfar curler Ross Craik was unable to emulate his big brother James at the Scottish Junior Championships in Aberdeen yesterday.
James and his team won last year’s title before adding world junior gold in Sweden, but Ross lost his last round-robin game on Saturday and was then beaten 10-4 by Dumfries skip Orrin Carson in yesterday’s semi-final.
Carson went on to defeat Jack Strawhorn 6-3 in the final and will now represent Scotland at the World Junior Championships in Bavaria in February.
Fay Henderson is also bound for Germany after retaining her 2021 girls’ title with a 6-5 victory over Amy Mitchell.
Perth’s Chloe Mcnaughton missed out on the knockout stages and finished eighth overall after winning two of her eight round-robin fixtures.
