Away tie for Brechin after Rothes beaten

BRECHIN 4 ROTHES 2

Brechin City have been drawn to play Nairn County away in the quarter-finals of the Highland League Cup following a 4-2 victory over Rothes at Glebe Park in the first round.

It was a closely fought encounter which City managed to win despite falling short of the standards they’ve set themselves in recent matches – a fact acknowledged by manager Andy Kirk.

He said: “It was a really tough game as Rothes were well organised and worked hard.

“I don’t think that it was our best performance by any stretch of the imagination as I thought we were a little bit off it in many aspects of the game.

“We’ve set ourselves high standards within the group in terms of the level of our performances but we fell short today in most areas of the pitch.”

The Speysiders grabbed the lead after three minutes when Aidan Wilson fired home but City were soon level when Grady Mcgrath converted a penalty after Marc Scott had been brought down in the box.

The visitors regained the advantage in the 24th minute through Greg Morrison but City again fought back to equalise when Botti Biabi swept home a Scott cross.

Biabi blasted home another Scott cross seconds into the secondhalf to give City the lead for the first time.

Biabi then completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after Scott had been fouled in the box with the decision hotly disputed by the Rothes players and bench.
