Ex-terror Connolly and loanee Glass taste glory with Derry City

Former Dundee United defender Mark Connolly starred as Derry City lifted the FAI Cup for the first time in a decade.

And Tannadice youngster Declan Glass will also return to Scotland this month with a winners’ medal.

The Candystripes hammered Damien Duff’s Shelbourne 4-0 in yesterday afternoon’s Aviva Stadium showdown. Jamie Mcgonigle opened the scoring in front of 32,412 fans in Dublin, before Cameron Mcjannett made it 2-0 prior to the break.

Mcjannett bagged his brace in the second period before Jordan Mceneff completed the scoring from the penalty spot as Derry – who last won Ireland’s national cup competition in 2012 – cruised to a memorable triumph.

Connolly, a stalwart for the Candystripes since joining them from United earlier this year, played the full match as his side kept a clean sheet.

He was also named jointthird in the League of Ireland player of the year awards following a splendid campaign.

Tangerines loan star Glass has endured a testing few months over the water.

However, he earned a winners’ medal after being named in the match-day squad, albeit he remained unused.

Glass did bag a hat-trick in an earlier round of the competition and started the semi-final win over Treaty United.

In total, the classy playmaker has made just seven appearances during his stint with Derry after picking up an injury and subsequently struggling to regain his place in the side.

He will return to Tannadice for the second half of the season in the hope of helping United climb away from the drop-zone.
