BOXING

Lochee Amateur Boxing Club won two gold and five silver medals at the Scottish Novice Championships at Ravenscraig.

The golden duo were Myles Mcghee in the senior 71kg category and Connor Crawford, 15, in the 50kg section.

Silver winners were Nairn Sparks, 12, at 40kg, Jackson King, 13, at 40kg, Yusuf Hussain, 13, at 37kg, Mckay Scobbie, 14, at 72kg and Scott Davie, 16, at 75kg.

Myles had to come through four contests to win his gold.

After being victorious at the initial stage last week, he had three contests in three days to secure gold.

Dundee St Francis boxer Alfie Mcdonald, a 15-year-old boxing at 57kg, won a silver medal.

CURLING

Perth curlers Duncan Mcfadzean and Robin Brydone won yesterday’s Original 16 Cash Spiel final in Calgary barely a week after lifting the Swiss Cup.

As in Basel, Mcfadzean, Brydone and their team-mates Euan Kyle and skip Ross Whyte had to navigate a tortuous route to the title, coming through both their quarter and semi-final despite being behind until the very last shot.

It was equally tense in the final after local favourite Aaron Sluchinski wiped out on early Scottish lead with a three at the fifth end. Team Whyte soon edged in front again and then made it 5-3 with a steal at the seventh, but Sluchinski still held the advantage of playing the final stone at the last end.

A three would win it – or a two take the match to an extra end – but the Canadian was restricted to a single point, giving the relieved Scots a hardfought 5-4 win.

They will now chase a hat-trick of titles when they stay on in Canada to compete at this week’s Red Deer Classic.
