Scots have right to decide on Union
Sir, – Jill Stephenson, in her letter of November
12, concludes with: “After all, Scottish secession is a matter not only for Scotland but for the whole of the UK.”
And, of course, there is truth in that as there would obviously need to be negotiation, but ultimately in an alleged union of equals, if the people of Scotland decide that they wish to leave surely that is their right.
This would be nothing unusual: over the years 65 countries, according to Wikipedia, have left the British empire/uk, some big, some small, some have thrived, some have struggled, but none, so far as I am aware, has begged to be accepted back under Westminster’s benevolent stewardship.
And if this union is not of equals, as unionists, notably Ms Stephenson herself, generally imply – Scotland being “too wee, too poor and too stupid” to make its own way in the world – surely it is in their interests to wish us well and wave us off, as they have done to all those others.
