New traffic bans were not obeyed
Parents have been urged to obey new traffic bans to keep Dundee schoolchildren safe after were spotted flouting many them.
Some Dundee parents ignored part-time restrictions as they came into force at North East Campus and Coldside Campus.
Cars continued to drive through restricted streets at both campuses, with many drivers even stopping on double yellow lines and grass verges.
At Coldside Campus one furious gran said parents shrugged their shoulders when she challenged them for flouting the ban.
Dundee City Council reminded parents the exclusion zones being introduced across the city are to protect children, amid on-going road safety issues created by some drivers bringing their vehicles too close to school gates.
The schemes also aim to ensure there is – less road danger from traffic; less inconsiderate parking outside of residents’ homes and fewer dangerous manoeuvres in streets surrounding schools; more active travel, such as walking, cycling and scooting and less congestion and better air quality.
A spokesperson for the council said that while the bans are very new, drivers are being encouraged to act responsibly by obeying the restrictions.
The spokesperson said: “We appreciate that these are new arrangements for the school community, but we would urge everyone to abide by them as they are put in place for one thing – the safety of children.
“It is up to everyone to show responsibility and to develop different habits when dropping off and picking up.
“We will be closely monitoring the situations at these schools as the initiative beds in.”
More part-time driving bans are due to come into force at three more Dundee schools over the next three weeks.
They will be introduced at St Andrew’s RC Primary School on November 21; Downfield Primary School on November 28 and Craigiebarns Primary School on December 5.
