Ald slang micht deh a death

-

Craigie fan Nancy Gallacher says catching sight of the name Dower in a recent edition of The Courier gave her pause for thought.

The Ashbank Road dweller explains: “It brought back a memory of my mother, caught napping – having a kip – in the afternoon. Poor Mum said, ‘Eh must have dowered ower, that tike needs changing, never got a wink o’ sleep’.

“Now, five generations later, this would have become, ‘I must have fallen asleep, that mattress needs renewing, never got any sleep’. So many familiar and common Dundee words seem now to be almost lost, with English the dominant language.”
