SPOONY SERVES IT UP FOR CANADA

-

David Wotherspoon got his first gametime for Canada under his belt in more than a year – and the St Johnstone star set-up two goals from corners in 45 minutes of action in Dubai.

The 32-year-old didn’t feature in his country’s impressive 2-1 pre-world Cup friendly win over Japan.

He was instead given a run-out against a Dubai second division side, which the Canadians won 2-0.

The bounce matches will serve as the final preparations for John Herdman’s squad ahead of next Wednesday’s opening fixture against Belgium.

The head coach said: “It’s a positive start. It was setting the tone for a World Cup game. When we face Belgium it will be a different level and our players can rise to that.”

This is Canada’s first World Cup since 1986 and their group fixtures are against Belgium (November 23), Croatia (November 27) and Morocco (December 1).

Wotherspoon, who played for Scotland U21s, qualifies for Canada through his mother.
