Blaze rips through rural kirk

- LINDSEY HAMILTON

Firefighters were last night tackling what was described as a “significant” fire at an ancient Angus church. Early reports suggest Lundie Church has been destroyed in the blaze, which started yesterday evening.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it attended the incident but could share no details.

A source said: “I have heard that the church has been very badly damaged and possibly completely destroyed in a fire there on Friday evening.”

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue Service last night said: “Firefighters are still in attendance at a fire at Lundie Church in Angus.

“We have no further details at this stage.”

Last November the 900-yearold Angus church sold at an online auction for just under £40,000.

The 12th Century kirk was previously owned by the Church of Scotland but had been sold.
