How USA doubles up in democracy
Sir, – It was with no small degree of humour I read the latest correspondence from Eric Gibbons (Letters, November 17).
Whilst I have seen any number of outlandish claims made on your letters page, Mr Gibbons’s claim that the USA is run by “100 senators” alone and we should therefore reduce our elected representatives to 30 in number, ranks as one the most “out there” so far.
For Mr Gibbon’s
education I feel I should point out the following:
He completely missed the House of Representatives with its 435 seats.
He completely missed the whole layer of state legislatures plus governors. Every state bar Alaska has a bicameral arrangement too (that’s two houses, Mr Gibbons).
Then most states have county and municipality elected bodies.
Not quite “just 100 senators”.
