Eggs expert Karen cracks it with prestigiou­s industry service gong

The winner of the Poultry Club of Scotland’s award for outstandin­g service and contributi­on to the industry has been revealed as Karen Campbell, of Glenrath Eggs.

Ms Campbell won the Howie/surgenor award 15 years after her father and founder of the Borders firm, Sir John Campbell.

In a citation from Kenny Shaw, managing director of Lohmann GB, Ms Campbell was praised for serving her company and the industry with distinctio­n for years.

Mr Shaw said: “Karen’s drive, initiative and enthusiasm were important factors in her contributi­on to both her family’s business and the industry at large.

“She has demonstrat­ed excellence and dedication in all her activities throughout her career and this continues to this day.

“Karen’s technical

knowledge, experience and insights have added value to Glenrath and the industry in many ways.”

After graduating from Edinburgh University, Ms Campbell taught at Innerleith­en Primary School before, in the mid1990s, she moved into the family business, initially in a human resources role.

She is a Nuffield scholar and a member of the NFU

Scotland poultry board. The award is given in memory of two poultry industry pioneers – Dennis Surgenor, of the Scottish Egg Producers and Retailers Associatio­n, and Tom Howie, from Lainshaw Farm Eggs.

The club’s 2022 young person of the year award was won by Laura Harrison, of PD Hook Hatcheries Ltd.
