Why you need to think ahead and create a plan of action

Plan ahead and get booked up in advance to ensure you get the best out of nights out. Here’s how to make the most of the festivities...

While it’s very tempting to throw all caution to the winds at Christmas, it’s even wiser to stop for a minute and imagine what January’s going to be like if you go totally over the score.

Presumably you hope to start the year with your job, relationships and health reasonably intact, so bear that in mind when you plan your nights out. Office parties are best enjoyed on a full stomach and minimum of drink, and having a plan of action beforehand is always smart.

Resist the temptation to fall into the arms of the office flirt, and under no circumstances make a play for your boss, or take the opportunity to reveal your feelings about them to the head of Human Resources.

Stay in control and save the wildest nights out for those who know and love you – and who can’t scupper your career.

For nights out with friends, remember that this time of year tends to be on the chilly side, so if your party gear resembles lingerie a warm cover-up is good on every score for getting there and back safely.

If you are really sensible take it in turns to drive to minimise hanging about for non-existent taxis.

However, if you do drive, make it an absolute rule not to have even one drink; the police are extra vigilant this time of year and a car can be a deadly weapon.

including ex-partners and best friends’ partners, so just don’t go there. Eat before you start drinking and don’t overdo it.

Always have enough money for a taxi/organise a lift with friends/never leave with someone you don’t know.

If you’re really organised, stick a pair of flat shoes in your jacket pocket so if all else fails at least you can walk home comfortably.

A drink of water before sleeping is a good move; add a soluble vitamin C tablet and you’ll feel on top form next day. Or if not top form, at least looking and sounding human.
