Robertson’s dentistry link
Margaret Robbie had particular reason to be saddened by the recent blaze that gutted an iconic Dundee building – and echoes a Courier columnist’s view of the historic former retail premises.
She writes: “Further to Jim Spence’s article on the destruction of Robertson’s furniture store, and his description of it being ‘a beautiful art deco edifice and city landmark’, it is surely worthy of note that the architect who designed it was my late husband’s father, H Pearce Robbie (190266).
“He was born in Dundee and qualified at Glasgow Royal College of Art. He became a partner in the firm Findlay, Stewart and Robbie, 33 Albert Square, which later became Robbie and Wellwood.
“Among the buildings he designed were the dental college and hospital, Park Place, Dundee in 1954, and he was working on the extension when he died.”
