Fighting victory sees City back in top spot

-

Brechin City moved back to the top of the Highland League following a hardfought 2-1 win over a plucky Forres side at Glebe Park.

The Can Cans grabbed the lead after 21 minutes when Jack Grant fired home a blistering drive from the edge of the box.

City fought back, but it wasn’t until the 67th minute that they levelled the match when Marc Scott poked the ball into the bottom corner of the net following a goalmouth scramble.

City enjoyed the bulk of pressure and finally made the vital breakthrough from the penalty spot after a frenetic final couple of minutes

Grady Mcgrath was clean through on goal when he appeared to be brought down by Forres keeper Stuart Knight.

Referee Robin Taylor pointed to the spot to the fury of the Forres players who indicated that Mcgrath had dived.

The visitors then had Dale Wood red-carded for foul and abusive language before Mcgrath stepped up to blast the spot-kick high into the net to give City a vital victory.

The result sees them move three points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand over title rivals Buckie Thistle.

Boss Andy Kirk was absolutely delighted with his side’s victory.

“One thing you have to say about the players we have here is that they never give up,” he said.

“From the opening minute until the end of the game they just keep going and they got their reward at the end of the day.

“The Forres players were clearly adamant that it wasn’t a penalty but from where I was standing it looked a clearcut decision.

“The referee and linesman were both on the spot and had a clear view so I think that it was the correct decision. At the end of the day it’s three vital points and that’s all that matters.”
