TV musical to lampoon life of Prince Andrew

-

Comedian Harry Enfield will play Sir Tony Blair in Prince Andrew: The Musical, Channel 4 has revealed as it released more details about the show.

Kieran Hodgson, previously announced as the Duke of York, will lead a cast of comics in an hour-long programme described as a “satirical send-up of the life and times” of Andrew set to seven original musical numbers.

Two Doors Down star Hodgson, who wrote the musical with Freddie Tapner, said: “The story of Prince Andrew is tragedy and farce rolled into one, so why not add ‘musical’ for good measure?

“I found it completely terrifying but we’ve pulled out all the stops, put every penny on screen and let rip at an institution that would perhaps prefer us to forget about all this. Also, I’m on a trampoline for a bit. Enjoy, world.”

The Queen’s second son stepped down from public life on November 20 2019 amid the fallout from a BBC interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in August that year.

The Channel 4 musical will include a “reimagining” of the interview with Emily Maitlis, which will include the song I Nailed It.

Maitlis will be played by actress and comedian Emma Sidi, known for Starstruck and Stath Lets Flats.

Romantic ballad Will You Be My Ex-wife will be a duet sung by Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, played by The World’s End actress Jenny Bede.

Comedian Munya Chawawa will play the then-prince of Wales, Charles.

Chawawa wrote the lyrics for his solo Obey, which reflects on royal scandals past and present. It will be performed before the finale, You’re Always Gonna Need An Andrew.

Stu Mather, executive producer at Hat Trick Productions, said: “What better way to celebrate the festive season than lampooning the country’s most high-profile pizza lover.”

The musical forms part of the broadcaster’s Truth and Dare season as it celebrates 40 years since it was created in 1982.

The season has already featured comedy TV shows The Return Of Friday Night Live and Jimmy Carr Destroys Art.

Prince Andrew: The Musical will air on Channel 4 in December.
