Triathlon cash for mountain rescue

- CHLOE BURRELL

Participants at this year’s Montrose and Forfar triathlons have raised more than £3,500 for the events’ charity partner, Tayside Mountain Rescue (TMR).

Tri Angus Ltd, which runs the triathlons in the region, has had a partnership with TMR for four years, raising just over £16,850 for the organisation across this period.

Those who took part in the annual event were given the opportunity to raise money in three different ways.

Thirteen participants at each event were given the chance to join Team TMR and fundraise for the charity via sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues.

All those involved could also donate to TMR when they signed up to take part in the activities, and the third method was local sports massage therapists from Sattva Wellness in Forfar took donations in return for a 15-minute postevent rub-down to help sooth any aches.

Established back in 2015 as a not-for-profit social enterprise, Tri Angus Ltd was set up to organise and deliver a triathlon in Montrose, with the hope of expanding across Angus.

The long-standing partnership has proved to be successful for both organisations, where in return for supporting TMR, a team of volunteers from the rescue charity provide first aid cover at both the Montrose and Forfar triathlons.

Tri Angus Ltd event director Maggie Lawrie said: “I am delighted that the event participants have managed to raise so much for our friends at Tayside Mountain Rescue this year.

“Despite the tough economic climate, the 2022 events have still raised a healthy sum for the charity and I can only thank the participants for their generosity.

“We are very grateful for the continued support from TMR.

“It’s very reassuring for both us as event organisers and the participants knowing that should they need medical assistance they are in very safe hands.

“We are very proud to be able to support such a fantastic organisation.”

Paul Russell, Tayside Mountain Rescue deputy team leader, said: “Having taken part in both triathlons before, I really appreciate all the work undertaken by Maggie and her team.

“The money raised provides much-needed funds for the charity and its volunteer rescue teams to continue the lifesaving work we do.

“Here’s to 2023!”
