Immelman inspired by ‘world class’ trio
Henry Immelman believes the challenge of trying to force his way into a “world class” Edinburgh Rugby back three is making him a better player.
The South African fullback admits it is a joy to be vying with on-form Argentine international Emiliano Boffelli and rampant Scotland wings Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe for a spot in the team.
Underlining the quality of Edinburgh’s backs, all three players scored tries in last weekend’s showdown between Scotland and Argentina at BT Murrayfield.
Immelman said: “If all the players are available and you get picked, you feel pretty good about yourself, proud of yourself, especially if Darcy, Duhan and Boff are there because they are a world-class back three.
“To play alongside them is amazing. You learn so much from them. It’s amazing for Edinburgh to have them.
“They are really exciting for the team and they will all come back full of confidence after their international games ready to play in the URC.
“Duhan and Darcy have been phenomenal for Scotland, and Boff has got so much confidence in that position. To train with them and get little tips and information from them is great for me and helps my confidence.
“It helps push you on having that level of competition. It makes training sessions harder.”
Immelman is hoping to be involved when Edinburgh resume their United Rugby Championship campaign away to Benetton this Saturday, four weeks after their last outing – a 25-17 win away to Cardiff.
That victory made it three wins on the spin for Mike Blair’s side, who are fifth in the URC table.
“I’m really looking forward to this weekend,” said Immelman.
“I think we’ve been superb this season apart from a few lapses in concentration.
“It’s about trying to keep that consistency into the second half of the season.”
