Ruling was crushing defeat for democracy
Sir, – So the people of Scotland are in a “voluntary” union which they cannot get out of because neither the Tories nor Labour will sanction an independence referendum and the UK Supreme Court has decided that the Scottish Government does not have the authority to run one of its own.
Repeated, comprehensive election victories by proindependence parties are, and will continue to be, ignored.
Some people will view Wednesday’s Supreme Court decision and the continual denial of a second
referendum as a defeat for the independence movement.
Rather, these things represent a shameful and crushing defeat for democracy and the concept of “letting the people decide” what type of government they wish.
As far as Scotland is concerned, Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer’s wishes outweigh just under 1,300,000 votes cast for independence-supporting parties at the 2019 general election.
Welcome to democracy Uk-style.
