Government should act to get rid of list MSPS who contribute so little

- Stewart Falconer. Glenisla View, Alyth.

Sir, – Since the recent decision of the UK Supreme Court in London, England, many media and political commentators repeatedly use the words “democratic will”.

The D’hondt system was used in Scotland in order to try and ensure that no political party has overall control at Holyrood.

As a result of the SNP’S consistent runaway success, it has been an abject failure.

What we have is a bunch of list MSPS, many of whom have never won an election in their lives, and the intellectual horsepower of many of them would suggest that the chance them ever doing so are very slim.

Some of them actually stand for a constituency and also as a list MSP in order to keep their options open.

Their role should be to hold the government to account in a responsible and constructive manner.

However, they offer no useful opposition and continually snipe from the sidelines.

Quite frankly, I have seldom heard one single word of sense from any of them.

They continue to gather around the dripping roast, taking hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ pounds every single year.

If the government seeks to make the next election a de facto referendum vote, then it must be laser focused.

Quite frankly these list MSPS serve no useful purpose and they would simply muddy the waters.

This government must act immediately in order to enact legislation to get rid of these costly lame ducks and to ensure the people of Scotland are crystal clear regarding their future voting intentions.
