Bad night for Stars as Clan run riot

-

Dundee Stars’ hopes of climbing the Elite Ice Hockey League table were dealt a blow last night after they were beaten 6-1 by Glasgow Clan.

Jeff Mason’s men went into the game in confident mood after a 4-2 home win against rivals Fife Flyers last week – their third derby victory of the season.

Stars had not met Clan since September, when they won 4-3 and 3-1 in the Challenge Cup Group stages.

Last night’s first period would be a scoreless affair even with both teams punished for minor penalties late in the opening stanza.

However, the second session proved much more fruitful for both offences.

Just 75 seconds after the match restarted, Glasgow’s John Dunbar slotted past Stars keeper Anton Svensson for the opening goal.

Clan then profited from their powerplay in 32 minutes as a slashing foul against Dundee’s Ian Parker allowed Craig Peacock to chip home a second for Clan.

Within seconds poor man-marking proved costly for the Stars as Dunbar was left free to pick his spot past Svensson.

Dundee got off the mark as Romans Semjenovs netted on the powerplay with 42 seconds remaining in the middle period.

The third period proved a nightmare for the Stars as Clan hit home three more goals to seal the win.

Steven Mcparland shot home on the powerplay to make it 4-1, before Kevin Massy blasted home a fifth two minutes later.

Peacock then netted his second of the night six minutes from time as the game got away from Dundee.

The two teams will meet again tonight at Dundee Ice Arena.

● Fife Flyers are away to Manchester Storm tonight before a home clash with Cardiff Devils tomorrow.
