FILM OF THE WEEK
Crocodile Dundee – Monday, Film4, 7.10pm
Australian comic Paul Hogan struck gold with this blockbusting 1980s hit about a grizzled outback legend who, when an American journalist sniffs a colourful human-interest story, finds himself adrift in bustling New York City. The film hits every culture clash and misfit rom-com beat, but therein lies its charm. Hogan knows what he’s doing. Resistance is futile. The whole thing is effortlessly charming. Crocodile Dundee is the very essence of comfort viewing, it will lift your spirits. You’ll feel better after watching it. Hogan never managed to follow it up with anything of note, but that just adds to its lightning-in-a-bottle magic. He gave us this sweet little film, and that’s enough.
