Pupils’ bag proves a big hit

Schoolchildren at Breadalbane Academy are running a bagselling enterprise – and business is booming.

The Aberfeldy school’s P7 class produced 800 hessian bags which they are selling in shops in the Perthshire town and in school.

Breadalbane Snazzy Bags are close to selling out with 600 gone, and the pupils plan to spend some of the proceeds on a school trip.

The children have taken on roles including in advertising, finance, market research and as managers to ensure their business runs like clockwork.

There is also a distribution team ensuring orders are fulfilled and a finance team keeping track of income and expenditure.

Teacher Maree Grant said: “They’ve done an incredible job and been extremely efficient.

They’re doing their jobs as well as any adults would in the industry.

“They have worked really well together and each team has been pivotal to the success of the business.”

The class began the enterprise with a loan from school funds and each pupil applied for a job.

They ran a school competition to design the bag using local landmarks like Wade’s Bridge and Aberfeldy Distillery.

Parents were interviewed to determine an appropriate price point and what size of bag would be most popular.

Posters and an imovie were made to publicise the product and local businesses contacted to secure sales outlets.

Pupil Ally Campbell, 12, said several traders are stocking the bag.

She said: “We are very thankful for these businesses who have agreed to sell our bags. We have sold nearly 600.

“We’re hoping to sell all of them before Christmas.”

Breadalbane’s Snazzy Bags are available from the school library and several local shops and will be sold at a Christmas market in Aberfeldy on Saturday.
