1975: British racing driver Graham Hill was killed when the light aircraft he was piloting crashed on to Arkley Golf Course near Elstree in Hertfordsh­ire. Also killed was Tony Brise, a promising young driver who was to spearhead Hill’s new Embassy team.

2002: Martin Edwards resigned as non-executive director of Manchester United and announced he would leave his post as chairman at the end of the season.

2006: England rugby head coach Andy Robinson stood down after a record of nine wins and 13 losses during his two years in charge.

2015: Great Britain won the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936 as Andy Murray inspired a 3-1 success against Belgium
