Let’s put a spoke in road tax for bikes
Sir, – Your correspondent, Clark Cross clearly has a grudge against cyclists,
He rails against free charging points quite rightly but, given half a chance, he always drags cyclists into the equation whenever the chance arises whether it is the subject of his letter or not.
Road tax is designed for motorised vehicles. With a few exceptions, cycles are not driven by a motor. Does he propose road tax for invalid scooters?
As for e-scooters, they, I believe, are illegal on UK roads and so don’t come into the argument. Like most cyclists, I pay road tax on a car. As I cannot use both car and bike at the same time, I can’t see how I should pay for both especially as only the car has a motor. As I have two bikes,
does he suggest I pay three lots of tax in the same way as if I had two or three cars?
Why not fine cyclists using the pavements instead of persecuting those who make an effort to keep fit and cause no pollution, generating income that way?
