Prime lamb champion goes to Susan and kids

-

Overall champion in the prime lamb section went to a delighted Susan Smith, who, with her three children, Emma, Laura and Neil, keep 50 commercial ewes and 20 Blue Texels at Drumnahive, Kildrummy.

It was their first time taking the supreme, although they won the butchers’ section in 2021.

Their winners were a pair of Beltex cross Texel cross lambs weighing 46kg each, and they were by a ram bought privately from Gary Morrison, which was also sire of their champion lambs at the spring show.

Reserve overall went to the Moir brothers, Newmill Home Farm, Cairness. William and David had a great show, also taking the Young Farmers and butchers’ championships. All their lambs were the same way bred, three-quarter Beltex by a 2,000gn Culsh tup bought at Carlisle.

The brothers run a large commercial sheep enterprise, finishing all their lambs, but enjoy their showing. They were champion at the Christmas Classic last year, although this year’s results have been their best yet.

Their reserve overall champions were knocked down to Ian Mcintosh Butchers, Fraserburgh, for £420 each, while Scotbeef bought the butchers’ champions for £300 apiece and the Young Farmers for £250 apiece, respectively.

Scotbeef also bought the reserve butchers’ champions, a pair of Beltex cross lambs from Ronnie Wilkie, Tillyboy, Echt, for £240 each.
