■ 1956: Floyd Patterson became the then-youngest world heavyweigh­t boxing champion when, at the age of 21, he beat Archie Moore.

■ 1991: United States defeated Norway 2-1 to win football’s first Women’s World Cup, in China.

■ 2004: Four-time Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent announced his retirement from rowing three months after his final triumph in Athens in the coxless fours.

■ 2012: Andrew Flintoff won his profession­al boxing debut after seeing off American Richard Dawson on points in a heavyweigh­t bout at the Manchester Arena.
