■ 1991: United States defeated Norway 2-1 to win football’s first Women’s World Cup, in China.

■ 2004: Four-time Olympic gold medallist Matthew Pinsent announced his retirement from rowing three months after his final triumph in Athens in the coxless fours.

■ 2012: Andrew Flintoff won his professional boxing debut after seeing off American Richard Dawson on points in a heavyweight bout at the Manchester Arena.
