MP hosts pupils on visit to centre of power

Two senior pupils from Woodmill High School in Fife spent a day volunteeri­ng down in Westminste­r with a local MP this week.

Cara Wyllie and Gregor Malcolm accompanie­d West Fife MP Douglas Chapman to the Houses of Parliament to observe a working day in the life of an MP and to help with parliament­ary events.

Kicking off the educationa­l visit at the public gallery to hear a debate in the House of Commons with business, energy and industrial strategy minister Grant Shapps, completed a tour of Westminste­r and met conservati­onist Dr Jane Goodall at a reception to support the campaign to ban trophy hunting.

In the afternoon, Cara and Gregor assisted at an All-party Parliament­ary Group meeting on the Arctic and Nordic councils.

Last year, Mr Chapman accompanie­d Cara and Gregor as youth delegates to the New York Times Climate Hub at COP26 in Glasgow.

Cara, speaking about her day in Westminste­r, said: “It was interestin­g to see how completely different it is from normal life at Westminste­r, it was really good to meet Jane Goodall and support her campaign to ban trophy hunting.”

Gregor added:“the tour of Westminste­r was fascinatin­g to see how major decisions are made within the UK.”
