Only radical change will help Scotland

-

Sir, – On the steps of Downing Street David Cameron said to the 1.6 million folk like myself “we hear you”, which means you make a lot of noise and – when you have stopped being noisy – we will just ignore you.

So, despite what Victor Clements says about more devolved powers I am one of the 1.6 million who are part of the Union despite voting for Scottish independence. No one asked me whether I actually wanted more powers or not. For myself, it is either a fully federal UK or an independent Scotland and more devolved powers is actually neither.

Instead of that we got a rather short-lived English Votes for English Laws (Evel) which no one was actually asking for and made Scottish, Welsh and Northern

Irish MPS second class in Westminster.

Then one fixed-term fiveyear parliament later we had a Brexit referendum we certainly did not ask for, and despite 62% of the electorate in Scotland not voting for it the prime minister passed the buck to Theresa May for enactment.

When she failed, after Brexit dominating question time for three years, the membership of the Conservative and Unionist Party decided the best recruiting sergeant for Scottish independence, Boris Johnson, would be party leader and prime minister.

Should we go to work or maybe not, cycle, walk or maybe use the public transport system, but remember socialdistancing is in place, or perhaps after all that a new leader and prime minister like Liz Truss was needed. What do you think?

It may have suited Tory Party members but certainly not the economy and, 49 days later, it was third time lucky with Rishi Sunak, another prime minister most of the country did not elect, in charge of our broken parliamentary democracy.

Will electing a slightly leftof-centre alternative in the Labour Party change things? Unless you implement radical electoral reform such as the single transferable vote, abolish the House of Lords and implement a fully federal UK, which not a lot of people unless you are Liberal Democrat seem to want, nothing will really change, in my opinion.
