TABLE TENNIS

Perth table tennis player Pat Duffy made the last four in the Scottish Veterans Championsh­ips at Bathgate. It was an even more remarkable feat considerin­g Pat, 71 next month, had a stroke on January 29. He said: “Despite the stroke I was back playing within two months. I have been left with pins and needles in my right hand but that is all I have been left with.” On his way to the semis, Pat won his group and beat No 2 seed Gordon Shaw (Cheltenham) with the match going to a deciding fifth set. In his semi, he lost to Glasgow’s Peter Shaw. As well as playing and coaching, Pat takes charge of the Parkinson’s sufferers table tennis group at Perth Tennis Club every Monday.

WEIGHTLIFT­ING

Pitlochry Weightlift­ing Club member Alex Phillips won his 42nd Scottish title at the Scottish Masters Championsh­ips in Glasgow on Saturday. Competing in the 73kg (60 to 64 years) class, Alex snatched 48kg and clean and jerked 62kg for a 110kg total. This total has qualified Alex to be able to compete at the British Masters in Birmingham in July.
