China aims to reach net-zero by 2060, so suggesting we do nothing is wrong

-

Sir, – Mr Cross’s letter (April

24 – Green targets are a waste of money) is another repetitive diatribe from the writer, jumping on the back of Mr Lang’s letter (April 22 – No evidence of CO2 ruling) who cites an ECHR ruling against the Swiss government on CO2.

Mr Cross’s argument is based on the facts that because China is the world’s biggest producer of CO2, we in the UK shouldn’t do anything. He does agree that CO2 is a problem.

An easy web search will provide Courier readers with China’s aspirations of being net-zero by 2060, not, as is frequently portrayed, never.

Mr Lang announces “it is well documented by a majority of eminent scientists that CO2 has no effect on climate”.

This statement is wrong and easily debunkable if Courier readers invest a wee bit of time absorbing the Nasa web page on climate change, which provides balanced accurate data analysis on the subject, unlike many of the climate change deniers.

China’s electricity council is planning to generate 60% of its power from renewables – solar, wind and biomass – rather than, as has been frequently erroneously implied, coal.

It would be good for the planet if China improved that target to an earlier date.

But saying the UK should do nothing is wrong, just so wrong.
