Korfball tournament raises vital funds for research into diabetes

-

A korfball tournament in Dundee has raised £200 for a type 1 diabetes charity.

Dundee Korfball Club hosted its annual Dundee Day tournament on Sunday, with its two teams – Dolphins and Dragons – placing second and third respectively overall.

KC Terda from the Netherlands were the victors of the competition, hosted on the 3G pitches outside at Disc.

More than 18 teams from 12 separate clubs competed and £200 will be donated to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

Teams also competed at the St Andrews Beach Tournament at West Sands on Saturday, with the Dundee players coming eighth out of 32 teams.

Korfball is a handball sport, often likened to netball or basketball.

Teams are mixed gender, with four men and four women, who each attack and defend, swapping position after two goals.

Like netball, there is no travelling with the ball and goals are scored in korfs – the Dutch word for basket – which are built into posts around 3.5m tall.

Defended shots do not count and a game lasts 44 minutes, with two halves.

The game originated in 1902, when Dutch teacher Nico Broekhuysen visited Sweden and discovered a game called ringboll.

He then invented korfball as a mixed-gender sport in Amsterdam.

Korfball came to Dundee in 2011, brought by Mary and Nigel Cooper who had previously played in England at Castle Korfball Club in Newcastle-underlyme, Staffordshire.
