Man held over Jenny’s murder

- By Alan Richardson

A BLAIRGOWRIE businessman was detained by police yesterday in relation to the Jenny Methven murder investigation.

William Kean (46) was said to be “helping officers with their inquiries” after spending more than a week in hospital recovering from wounds that are believed to have been self-inflicted.

Jenny (80) was murdered in her Kildinny Cottage home near Forteviot on February 20. Her battered body was discovered by her son, David, a former employer of Mr Kean.

The focus of the murder probe shifted to Mr Kean’s home in Gallowbank Road last week and forensic examinations were stepped up yesterday.

A group of forensics officers appeared to be thoroughly searching the bungalow.

Neighbours confirmed Mr Kean has not been seen since last week. A car, believed to be Mr Kean’s Mercedes, was previously removed from the street for examination.

It is understood the married father-of-one has been recovering in Murray Royal Hospital, Perth, after attempting to take his own life at Woodside last week.

Police refused to confirm a suicide note was left at the home of a pensioner in the village for whom he did gardening work. The man refused to comment yesterday.

Because of his medical condition Mr Kean had been unable to talk to police.

A spokesman for the force said yesterday: “Tayside Police detective officers carrying out inquiries into the murder of 80-year-old Perthshire woman Jenny Methven have today detained a 46-year-old man.”

Police are seeking information on more vehicles seen in the Forteviot area on the day of the murder.

The three vehicles were seen by witnesses travelling between, or close to, a stretch of road known locally as the “bad bends” between Forgandenny and Forteviot between 9.30am and 10.15pm.

A burgundy Transit van was seen at around 10.10, while a silver hatchback car was seen waiting to pass a van at the stretch of road between 9.30 and 10am.

The car was driven by a blonde-haired woman and there was an empty child seat in the back.

A white panel van with a blue stripe along its sides was also seen on the same stretch of road at around the same time. It had its hazard lights on.

Anyone who saw the vehicles on the day or who recognises them by their description is asked to call police on 01738 892925 or 0300 1112222, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
