Newcomers ready to contest national handball finals

- by Neil Robertson

DUNDEE HANDBALL Club will contest the Scottish cup final this weekend, less than a year after they were formed.

The players will travel to the Ravenscraig Sports centre in Motherwell to face Edinburgh who will start the game as strong favourites.

However, cofounder of the Dundee club, Stelios Nikolaou, is confident they can give a good account of themselves, and he is hoping being in the final will raise the profile of the sport locally.

The Cypriot student said: “We are delighted to be through to the Scottish National cup final against Edinburgh Handball Club.

“They are firm favourites to win, but we are determined to give it our best shot.

“We have had problems because most of our players are students from Europe and some of them have now gone home after sitting exams.

“However, we still have enough players to give a good account of ourselves.

“Handball is the secondlargest sport in Europe and there around 22 million players worldwide.

“It is one of the fastestgrowing sports in the UK today and there is a lot of excitement with Great Britain entering their first Olympic handball team this year.

“We are also hoping to increase the profile of the sport locally and are going to be holding taster sessions in Grove Academy and some primary schools.

“We are also going to have some beach handball sessions this summer for people to come along and try the sport, but before that, we have the cup final to look forward to. We are taking quite a few supporters through to Motherwell and hopefully we will give them a lot to cheer about.”
