PERTH TABLE tennis player Gavin Rumgay has been left out of the Great Britain team for the Olympic Games this summer.

The London-based Scottish number one, who is currently playing in the Shanghai Open, had hoped to make the final team after a number of notable performances in recent months.

However, he failed to break into the world’s top 200 and slipped to number five in the British rankings, and the selectors have gone with the English trio of Paul Drinkhall, Andrew Baggaley and Liam Pitchford.

The women’s team is made up of English pair Joanna Parker and Kelly Sibley and Nor ther n Ireland’s Na Liu.

Drinkhall said: “It’s a great achievement to be selected for Team GB.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in a home Games. I can only guess how it will feel, but it’s a fantastic opportunity.”

Team GB chef de mission Andy Hunt said: “I am delighted to welcome a full complement of six table tennis players as officially selected members of Team GB for London 2012.

“Both … teams include a good balance of youth and experience.

“The likes of Paul Drinkhall and Liam Pitchford have demonstrated great potential at junior level, which bodes well for the future of British table tennis.”

Table tennis team leader Jill Parker added: “This will be the first time that we will have competed in both the men’s and women’s team event.

“Our athletes have prepared thoroughly for this chance of a lifetime, and with home support they are confident they will rise to the occasion.”
