MONTROSE SLIPPED out of the top four in Division Three after a home defeat at the hands of Berwick.

The visitors grabbed the lead in 25 minutes when Darren Lavery got away on the right and shot into the bottom corner.

Montrose hit back and were level in 39 minutes when Lloyd Young headed home a cross from Paul Watson.

A minute from half-time, Garry Wood was denied by a fine save from Berwick keeper Ian McCaldon, then in stoppage-time at the break Jamie Winter sent a fierce drive over from 30 yards.

Five minutes into the second half, a cross from a Berwick trialist hit the bar.

Berwick got their noses in front in 75 minutes when Fraser McLaren flicked the ball home from close range.

Montrose thought they had equalised five minutes from time when McCaldon made a superb save from substitute Scott Morton.

However, Berwick put the icing on the cake in the third minute of added time when Kevin McDonald finished off a neat move.

Montrose boss Stuart Garden said: “I am disappointed with our performance as we have been on a good run.

“At 1-1 we had a couple of chances and didn’t take them and we ended up getting punished.

“We have slipped out of the top four but we are still there or thereabouts. We just have to get things right on Saturday.”
