Johnny can make a splash for Teal

- by The Ferret

Johnny SplaSh enjoyed no sort of luck at Brighton last time, but he can make a victorious return to the seaside venue in the AATC Act V “The End of Aids” Handicap.

Roger Teal’s four-year-old twice found his path blocked at critical stages throughout a five-furlong handicap, but finished strongly to get to within a neck of The Strig.

Although that form is nothing to write home about, it at least showed Johnny Splash is coming to hand nicely for this encounter and that he is clearly at home on Brighton’s difficult terrain.

Teal’s inmate has still not won on turf — his two triumphs to date having been achieved on Lingfield’s all-weather track — but it would be a big surprise if he could not get competitive here off a lowly mark of 52.

There is little wonder the likeable Tenhoo takes a sizeable hike in trip for the Racing UK This Way That Way Handicap at Hamilton.

Derek Shaw’s seven-year-old has never won over a mile and five furlongs, but is certainly worth an interest at that distance from what we have seen this year.

Tenhoo won over a mile and a half at Haydock last month, and demonstrated he is not yet in thrall to the handicapper when a staying-on fourth at Pontefract on his last start.

That race was over an inadequate 10 furlongs, so it is not a fanciful notion to expect further progress over a more demanding test of stamina, especially on fast ground.

The gelded son of Reset is usually a very reliable horse in handicaps like this and has, reassuringly, been left alone by the assessor.
