Fired up runners raise thousands for Maggie’s

-

MR BEAN may have wished he had a chariot of fire to try and outrun Maggie’s Fife and Forth Valley community fundraiser Tu Edwards.

The Mr Bean impersonator out on St Andrews’ West Sands was organiser of a Chariots of Fire 5k run, Ben McLeod.

He made sure Tu would run a few laps to get to the £2,660.84 raised.

The event gave runners the opportunity to don their white kits and run to the legendary Chariots of Fire theme tune.

More than 350 adults and children took part and Mr Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson, who scripted a Chariots of Fire sequence as part of the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony, supported the charity event by donating signed photos which were presented to the person who did the best Eric Liddell impersonation.

Ben said: “It was an absolute privilege to be able to help so many people have so much fun and manage to raise so much money for a great charity with roots in the area.

“The whole event was a real community effort and special thanks to Colin Brown and St Andrews Rotary for their support, both in the build-up and organisation and again on the day.

“The sun really shone on us and I’m hugely excited to do it all again next year.”

Thanking everyone who helped, Tu said: “It was a fantastic day full of smiles and sunshine in the beautiful setting of St Andrews.

“This donation will make sure we can continue to provide the free practical, emotional and social support that people with cancer need.”
