Family to say final farewell to‘wonderful son’

THE FUNERAL of a schoolboy cyclist killed in a crash will be held this week.

Connor Shields was cycling home with friends along a country road when he was knocked down by a car lastWednes­day night.

The 14-year-old was airlifted to hospital following the accident but died of his injuries.

The accident happened on the A975 Cruden Bay to Newburgh road in Aberdeensh­ire.

His death left the small community of Ellon where he lived in mourning.

Yesterday his parents Ken and Janet described him as a “wonderful son” and a much loved brother and best friend to his sister Rebecca.

The teenager’s funeral will be held at Ellon Parish Church on Friday, at 11am, followed by his burial at the town cemetery.

Connor was knocked off his bike by a brown Volvo XC90 at a junction on a road not far from his home.

He is one of nine cyclists killed on Scotland’s roads since the beginning of the year.

Alarmed campaigner­s have now called for more investment to make roads safer for cyclists to travel on.

Two ghost bikes, cycles which were painted white, were placed outside the Scottish Parliament to represent cyclists killed on the roads this week.

A female cyclist in her fifties is the latest to have been fatally injured while cycling in the Highlands.

The woman was knocked down by a car on the A831 at Milton, Drumnadroc­hit, on Monday morning.
