Police name holidaymak­er crushed at caravan park

A PENSIONER crushed to death after he was struck by a car at a campsite was named by police yesterday.

Andrew MacKay, who is from the Glasgow area, is believed to have been standing outside the static caravan when the 4X4 ploughed into him at the weekend.

The 65-year-old had gone outside to cool down after cooking his evening meal when the tragedy happened.

The silver Diahatsu Terios careered across the grass verge and ran into him after he stepped outside.

The pensioner was seriously injured and ended up trapped between the 4X4 and the caravan following the accident on Sunday night.

Fire crews and paramedics raced to the scene of the accident at East Balthangie Caravan Park, near Cuminestow­n in Aberdeensh­ire, and battled to free him.

But Mr MacKay did not survive, despite their attempts to save him.

A police spokesman said yesterday: “Police can confirm that the 65-year-old man who died on Sunday following a collision at a caravan park has been identified as Andrew MacKay from the Glasgow area.

“Police Scotland were called to East Balthangie, Cuminestow­n, Turriff, at around 8.35pm.

“As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

His distraught family were too upset to speak about the accident yesterday.

The female driver of the 4X4 is thought to have been staying in a tent at the campsite with her partner and two children.

Police are investigat­ing the incident to establish the cause of the accident.
