United clash just what we need, says Jefferies

-

DUNFERMLINE BOSS Jim Jefferies believes tonight’s pre- season friendly against top flight opposition will help his young squad continue their upward learning curve, writes Craig Smith.

The transfer embargo imposed on the Fife club on signing players over the age of 21 following administration means a heavy reliance on youth yet again this season, but Jefferies has already been impressed with what he’s seen from his players so far in pre-season — particularly the weekend’s 2-2 draw with Falkirk.

“There’s a lot we can take from the game and it gives these young kids a lift and a belief that they can go out and show us what they can do,” the Pars boss noted as his side prepares to face Dundee United.

“If we run into injuries, these boys will come in, so by giving them their wee spell in the team it makes them want more.

“It is a great opportunity for them and it gives them the hunger to play more first-team football, so when they come into training they will try to catch my eye, and that’s what we want.

“We need a strong squad who know what to expect and how to handle it and that is why we are pleased with the opportunity to do that in pre-season.

“Results are nice and you want to try and win, but for me it’s all about getting match fitness before the season starts.”

Trialist forward Kevin Buchan, formerly of Dundee, and 18-year-old former Torquay defender James Washburn might be among the players to get a run-out against United this evening after training with the club in recent days.
