Drivers urged to protect their vehicles against thieves
DRIVERS IN the Collydean area of Glenrothes are being urged to make sure they lock up following a number of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the area.
Community safety officer PC Kerry Anderson said: “A lthough vehicle crime is decreasing both locally and nationally, the Collydean area of Glenrothes has recently experienced a spate of thefts from unlocked vehicles.
“Despite increased security on newer vehicles, we cannot relax and I am urging people to be particularly vigilant.
“Most car crime can be avoided by taking some simple steps as the opportunist thief commits the majority of this type of crime. The average street criminal will not waste time on the ‘off chance’ that there may be something worth stealing from a car. They will break in to unlocked cars or when they see something they believe to be of value inside the car.
“People can keep themselves safe by following these tips:
Ensure your vehicle is locked at all times when it is unattended, even if only leaving it for a short time;
Try to park in well-lit areas, where your car is easily seen;
Remove items of value from the car or put them out of sight;
Be aware of anybody showing interest in your car or its contents;
A lways set the alarm or immobilising device you have fitted.”
