WHAT DO you give to the prince who has everything?

It appears the Scottish Government is suffering with the age-old conundrum as they try to choose a present for the royal baby.

Alex Salmond admitted ministers have got their “thinking caps on” as they try to deliver the perfect Scottish gift.

For her jubilee, the Queen was given a special garden at Holyrood, a census of Balmoral from 1901 and an app containing the highlights of her reign.

However, Mr Salmond toldThe Courier no decision has been made yet on what to give the child, who is now third in line to the throne.

“We will think of something particularly Scottish, which will be a little bit unusual, and will typify the congratulations of the people of Scotland to the royal couple,” he said.

“So we are still thinking about it because we had to find out if it was a boy or a girl but in due course we will think of something appropriate on behalf of the people of Scotland.”

Never shy of a bet, Mr Salmond also reckons a name with a Fife twist might be an outside contender.

He added: “It’s up to William and Kate what they call their boy but I saw something where someone said they thought Andrew might have a sneaking chance because of St Andrews.”

Meanwhile, US president Barack Obama and wife Michelle sent their congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last night, saying: “We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings.”

Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd wished the “royal bub” all the best on behalf of all Australians.

“This is a day of great joy,” he said. “When a new bub comes into the world, any old day, any part of the world, it is frankly a time for rejoicing.”
