Eco-friendly school flies the flag for community

-

QUEEN ANNE High School has now achieved its third green flag.

The Dunfermline school’s eco team and projects involving pupils, staff and the wider community were highly praised, so much so that they may be asked to be Eco Schools ambassadors to help other secondary schools who have not yet obtained their coveted green flag.

The main issues so far this year have been litter, transport and biodiversity.

The eco team measured the school’s global footprint and analysis showed it has reduced its ecological footprint.

The team has promoted sustainable travel, cycling to school and improved facilities for cyclists, contributing to the School Travel Plan.

The team has adopted a wild square in the school g rounds, car ried out RSPB wildlife surveys and increased planting.

It has a herb garden in the inner courtyard and has helped collect bottles for the new bottle greenhouse.

Staff and pupils took part in Earth Hour and Fair Trade coffee mornings.

Links have been built with McLean primary schools, including a joint litter- pick in the community.

Further links have been made with the eco committee at Dunfermline High School.

Twelve of the young people in the eco team have obtained Saltire awards to recognise their volunteering skills.
