Injury almost put paid to proposal
RYAN CONROY has revealed that an injury he picked up against Morton on Saturday nearly put paid to his plans to go down on bended knee to propose to his long-term girlfriend Jayne.
The wide midfielder helped the Dark Blues secure a victory in Greenock that propelled John Brown’s side to the top of the Championship table.
Conroy, though, had to hobble off late on after picking up a strain at the back of his leg and he admits it caused him a problem or two when it came to facing his second “match of the day”.
He said: “Saturday was a real day to remember. I got engaged at night at the Glenskirlie Hotel in Kilsyth to my girlfriend Jayne Faickney so it was a good day all round.
“I was determined to get down on bended knee but I had hurt my leg during the game against Morton. So it took me a while to do it but I got there in the end.
“We have been going out with one another for three years so it was about time I proposed.
“The rest of the boys in the team have been giving me stick saying I have been punching above my weight anyway.”
Conroy hopes he will be fit to take his place in the side for this weekend’s game at Dens against Cowdenbeath as he admits that everyone at the club is on a high after going top of the table but he revealed that boss Brown has warned his players they need to be more clinical if they want to stay at the summit.
He said: “We were told at half-time against Morton that they would come out and make a real game of it as they are fighting for their lives at the moment.
“That was what they did and they managed to get a goal back but, to be honest, they didn’t really have many chances after that.
“In the first half, we could have had four or five goals. Even in the second 45, Declan Gallagher, Jimmy McAlister and Craig Beattie had chances.
“The manager has said to us that we need to finish games off more. At 2-0, it is always a bit dodgy so it was just great to get the three points in the bag.”
Meanwhile, Kyle Benedictus made his return from a back injury for the Dundee reserves on Monday night, helping Gavin Rae’s side to a 3-1 victory over East Fife, with Leighton McIntosh netting a double and Craig Wighton scoring the third.
The game also saw former club captain Stephen O’Donnell play 90 minutes.
