Ex-pupils can help school mark 50th anniversar­y

BALWEARIE HIGH School in Kirkcaldy is planning a range of events in celebratio­n of its 50th anniversar­y this year.

Suggested events so far include concerts, open day/ evening, ceilidh, sporting events and an exhibition, for which they are appealing for donations, such as old school ties.

The school would welcome any other event suggestion­s people may have and is asking former pupils and staff to share their memories of their time at the high school.

Balwearie High School opened in 1964 as a junior secondary under its first rector, Tom Elder. In 1972 the school became a comprehens­ive under rector Oliver McLaughlan, who held the post for 18 years.

The longest-serving rector at the school was Gordon Mackenzie, who held the post for 22 years until 2010.

The celebratio­ns will take place under the current rector, Dr James More, a former pupil.

There are many more former Balwearie high pupils who have gone on to make great contributi­ons to their community, both nationally and internatio­nally. These include Olympic field hockey player Stephen Dick, actress Sharon Small, MSP D av i d Torrance and footballer Lewis Stevenson, who plays for Hibernian.
