Land an amazing home that is truly out of this world

- by George Mair

A FA MILY home has gone on the market — with plenty of space inside.

The four-bedroom bungalow in Gullane, East Lothian is inspired by science fiction shows like StarTrek and the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The kitchen looks like a set from Space: 1999, and the living room would not look out of place on the Starship Enterprise.

Kirsten and Gary van Breda have spent around £60,000 and seven years creating their dream home but they are selling up to move to Edinburgh for work reasons.

Their detached “house” in Broadgait Green is on the market for offers over £375,000.

Kirsten, 45, said yesterday: “Gary and I have always been a bit different, and we get frustrated with houses nowadays that are all very similar. We very much like sci-fi series like Space: 1999, films like 2001, and their view of what the future was going to be. “That was our starting point.” Kirsten and Gary, 46, who have two children Rhona, 13, and Stuart, 12, decided to create their own look with influences going back to 1950s visions of future living.

The lounge has sliding doors and a “ball-chair” that looks like a space capsule.

Even an old grandfather clock, Kirsten says, is inspired by a scene in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 cult classic 2001.

On one sofa is Kirsten’s favourite Doctor Who cushion featuring a Dalek on one side and a Cyberman on the other.

Kirsten said: “The kitchen is all curvy — a bit like something from Space: 1999. The Corian units sweep down with a row of lights that make them look like they are hovering at night. The living room is like the Jetsons meets 2001.” Gary, 46, who works in IT, said: “We noticed how people seemed to follow the latest trends when decorating their homes to be fashionable, and how quickly that could become jaded and dull. “This way it is so unfashionable it will never go out of fashion.” Kirsten, who works as a telecoms IT security consultant, revealed the couple’s friends are split over their designs — and so are their children.

While Rhona prefers Victorian period designs, son Stuart loves the futuristic look and sleeps under a Star Wars duvet.

Kirsten said: “I don’t think we’ll be able to do anything like this again. It’s a one-off.”

The house is being marketed by Simpson and Marwick in North Berwick.
